Founding of Smith Brothers Office Outfitters & Formation of SmithCFI
Brothers Dale and Sibley Smith, together with McKee Smith, established Smith Brothers Office Outfitters, laying the foundation for a family-led business dedicated to outfitting workplaces with quality office furniture and solutions. For the next 77 years, the company focused on selling office furniture, evolving through a series of mergers and acquisitions into what became known as SmithCFI.
Moving Beyond Furniture
SmithCFI was acquired by Matt Newstrom and Shastan Jee, who recognized the industry’s outdated model of space creation and saw an opportunity to simplify and improve it. Their distinctive approach drew from experience in corporate real estate and consulting across multiple industries to reinvent how workplaces are made—by uniting strategy, design, technology, and delivery under one coordinated process that cuts through confusion and creates more certainty.
With this fresh vision, Hyphn was born, symbolizing connection between people, place, and technology, and representing a bold new model for how workplaces are imagined and realized.

Hyphn acquired bkm OfficeWorks, San Diego’s leading commercial furniture dealer, expanding its reach into Southern California while bringing Hyphn’s distinctive ability to deliver integrated workplace solutions.
